The Forest House was built in 1852 and since it's completion has been a popular and well know piece of Siskiyou County history. The house stands 2 stories high with a sprawling front porch with a large shaded balcony over head, where many hours have been spent over the years enjoying family, friends and the surroundings. The balcony served as a retreat for those that attended the many balls and social events throughout the years. The Forest house served as a resort and was a destination for it's hundreds of visitors. Visitors arrived on horseback and by buggy or carriage. The Forest House throughout it's memorable and long career had multiple purposes and successful endeavors from having a saw mill on site, to running at one point was said to be California's largest orchard. The land evolved and grew into a thriving ranch with herds of cattle and various crops. There was an ice house and ice pond on the property as well where ice was cut, stored and delivered by horse drawn wagons throughout town. Today the house and ranch are still owned and operated by the 5th generation of the Burton family that bought the house for 25 cents an acre in 1909. The family's current mission and goal is to restore the historical house.
